Peter Heals the Lame Man at the Beautiful Gate

Context & Setting

  • Main Biblical Reference: Acts 3:1–10 (speech continues in Acts 3:11–26)
  • Historical Period: Early church era under Roman rule, shortly after Jesus’ resurrection and ascension
  • Geographic Location: Jerusalem, at the temple complex (near a gate called “Beautiful”)
  • Key Characters: Peter, John, a man lame from birth, temple crowds

The Narrative

The Beginning:
Peter and John go up to the temple at the hour of prayer. At a gate called “Beautiful,” they meet a man who has been lame from birth and is regularly placed there to beg from worshipers entering the temple.

The Middle:
The man asks them for alms, but Peter tells him he has no silver or gold. Instead, Peter commands him, “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.” Immediately the man’s feet and ankles are strengthened; he stands, walks, and enters the temple with them, leaping and praising God.

The End:
People recognize the healed beggar and are filled with wonder and amazement at what happened. A crowd gathers as the man clings to Peter and John, and the miracle becomes a public sign that draws attention to the apostles’ witness about Jesus.

Theological Meaning

This healing functions as a sign of God’s saving power at work through the risen Jesus. Peter explicitly attributes the miracle not to human ability or piety, but to the name and authority of Jesus Christ, showing that Jesus continues to act through his apostles. The story also portrays restoration: a man long excluded by disability is brought into worship, praising God, as a visible testimony that God’s redemptive work is breaking into public life.

Historical & Cultural Insight

Daily prayer at the Jerusalem temple (morning and afternoon) drew steady crowds, making temple gates natural places for beggars to seek support. The “Beautiful Gate” is commonly understood as a prominent entrance to the temple courts, fitting the narrative’s emphasis on visibility and the large public reaction to the healing.
