The Encounter:
After teaching, Jesus enters a boat with His disciples to cross the sea. A great windstorm arises, and waves beat into the boat so that it is filling.
The Divine Intervention:
The disciples wake Jesus and appeal to Him. Jesus rises and rebukes the wind and says to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” (Mark 4:39). He then questions their fear and lack of faith.
The Immediate Result:
The wind ceases and there is a great calm. The disciples respond with fear and wonder, saying, “Who then is this, that even wind and sea obey him?” (Mark 4:41).
Jesus exercises divine authority over nature, commanding wind and sea with effective word. The miracle functions as a sign of His identity: creation obeys Him, revealing that His authority is not merely human but aligns with the LORD’s sovereignty over the waters. It also exposes the call to faith in His presence and power.
The Sea of Galilee sits in a basin below sea level, where winds can funnel through surrounding terrain and produce sudden violent squalls. In Scripture, the sea often represents forces beyond human control, highlighting the significance of Jesus’ command bringing immediate calm.
“And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Peace! Be still!’ And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.” — Mark 4:39
