The Beginning:
After Jesus’ ascension, the apostles returned to Jerusalem and devoted themselves to prayer along with other believers. In this waiting period, the community faced a leadership vacancy because Judas, who had been numbered among the Twelve, was no longer with them.
The Middle:
Peter stood among the gathered disciples and explained that Judas’ betrayal and death fulfilled Scripture and that his place of oversight should be filled. The group set qualifications: the replacement had to be someone who had accompanied Jesus’ followers from John’s baptism through the resurrection, becoming a witness to Jesus’ resurrection with the apostles. Two men were put forward—Joseph called Barsabbas (Justus) and Matthias—and the believers prayed, asking the Lord who knows all hearts to show whom he had chosen. They then cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias.
The End:
Matthias was counted among the eleven apostles, restoring the number of the Twelve. The community remained united in prayer as they continued to await the promised coming of the Holy Spirit.
This episode highlights God’s sovereign guidance of the early church as it seeks to act in faithfulness to Scripture and the mission entrusted by Jesus. The restoration of the Twelve underscores continuity with Israel’s story and signals the church’s readiness to bear witness to the risen Christ. The communal prayer and appeal to the Lord’s knowledge of the heart emphasize that apostolic witness is ultimately rooted in God’s calling rather than human preference.
Casting lots was a recognized Jewish practice for making decisions when human insight was limited, often used in sacred contexts to seek God’s direction (compare priestly and communal uses in the Old Testament). In Acts 1, lots function as a public, impartial method following prayer, before the Spirit’s dramatic guidance at Pentecost.
“So they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias.” — Acts 1:26
