The Beginning:
As Israel camps near Moab, Balak fears Israel’s growing presence and seeks to weaken them. He sends messengers to Balaam, a well-known diviner, to come and curse Israel. God tells Balaam not to go and not to curse Israel, because Israel is blessed.
The Middle:
Balak sends more honored officials with greater rewards, and Balaam asks God again. God permits Balaam to go, but only on the condition that he speak only what God commands. On the journey, the angel of the LORD stands in the road as an adversary; Balaam does not see the angel, but the donkey does and turns aside three times. Balaam strikes the donkey, and the LORD enables the donkey to speak, questioning Balaam’s harshness.
The End:
God then opens Balaam’s eyes so he can see the angel with drawn sword blocking the way. The angel rebukes Balaam and explains that the donkey’s actions spared Balaam’s life. Balaam confesses his wrongdoing and is told to continue to Balak—but to speak only the words God puts in his mouth.
This account emphasizes God’s sovereign freedom over human plans and spiritual powers: Israel’s blessing cannot be overturned by hired curses. God confronts Balaam’s divided motives and makes clear that prophetic speech is not a tool for sale but is subject to divine command. The story also shows God’s ability to reveal truth through unexpected means, exposing blindness in a “seer” and demonstrating that God can restrain harm and redirect outcomes according to his purposes.
In the ancient Near East, kings often sought religious specialists to pronounce blessings or curses believed to influence battles and national destiny. Numbers 22 reflects this cultural practice while presenting Israel’s God as superior to such manipulation: the divine will cannot be bought, negotiated, or forced.
