The Beginning:
As the number of disciples grew in Jerusalem, a complaint arose within the believing community. The Hellenistic Jews said their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution of food, creating tension between groups in the church.
The Middle:
The twelve apostles gathered the disciples and clarified priorities: they should not abandon the ministry of the word of God to manage daily service. They directed the community to select seven men of good reputation, “full of the Spirit and of wisdom,” to oversee this need. The whole group agreed and presented the chosen men—among them Stephen and Philip—to the apostles, who prayed and laid hands on them.
The End:
With this shared structure of service and oversight, the church’s ministry continued without neglecting either the word or practical care. The word of God spread, the number of disciples increased greatly in Jerusalem, and many priests became obedient to the faith.
This episode shows Christ continuing to build and order his church through the apostles’ teaching and the Spirit’s guidance. God’s care is not only proclaimed but embodied: practical mercy toward vulnerable widows is treated as a faithful expression of the gospel’s communal life. The appointment of qualified servants also highlights how the church maintains unity amid cultural and linguistic differences, ensuring that prayer, the ministry of the word, and tangible provision all remain integral to its witness.
In the first-century Jewish world, widows were among the most economically vulnerable, and almsgiving was a recognized religious duty. The mention of “Hellenists” and “Hebrews” reflects real linguistic and cultural diversity among Jews in Jerusalem, including diaspora Jews who commonly used Greek; equitable distribution of communal support would have been essential for unity in such a mixed community.
“Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom.” — Acts 6:3
